After failing a physical for the Navy in December 1954, because of my flat feet, I joined HQ 194th Tank Battalion which was a National Guard unit in my home town in May of 1955. I attend summer camp at Ft Ripley. We slept in tents that were pitched over cement pads. I worked in the supply room. Also they had me in the Motor Pool changing tires.
I left Brainerd after I graduated from Washing High School in June of 1955. I went down to Minneapolis where I worked for Wrap-in-Wax Paper Company. I attended a Railroad school to be a telegraph operator. I trained at the Minneapolis Armory every week. There were quite a few guys from Brainerd working in Minneapolis, so we trained as our own group we had a Lt in charge. We had first aid classes and a lot of Marching. By March of 1956 I asked to go on Active Duty for a short time.
